Halloween 2024 – don’t take a fall this Fall
Trick or treating is nearly upon us again but make sure that it’s a treat for everyone, and not a tricky trip or slip. So, here are Hunt Footcare’s top footcare tips for your trick and treat adventures this Halloween.
Costumes, cloaks and capes
Whatever character you decide to dress up as, (and these days almost anything goes), make sure your kids won’t fall over costume items that are too long.
- If the front is too long, steps and slopes become tricky, and you could tread on the costume and tip forwards.
- If the back is too long, others walking behind might step on them and you’ll both tumble.
- If it’s windy, cloaks and capes can tangle around kids’ legs. Make sure they don’t trail around and shorten the costume if required.
Shoes, boots and costume feet
If it’s wet and chilly on 31st October night, your feet need protecting. Make sure all Halloween footwear is waterproof, warm, comfortable and supportive – after all it’s a long night of walking. Remember, you may be walking along unfamiliar paths, driveways and steps, and inevitably over slippery wet leaves. So, shoes with good grip on their soles are a very good idea, especially in the rain.
Make sure your orthotics are transferred into your costume shoes for the night. Or just wear ordinary footwear; no-one will notice your feet in all the excitement, and your feet will probably thank you in the morning.
Also, take extra care if your costume includes some decorations or covering for the feet, such as hairy Big Foot overshoes or plastic skeleton feet. Make sure they are firmly attached and don’t come loose during walking, to reduce the chance of literally tripping over your own feet!
Hoods, masks, and buckets
Hoods and masks can obscure vision so make sure they are secure and that your child can see clearly.
- Take a flashlight to use alongside any LED lanterns.
- Don’t give kids too much to carry, so they have a hand free to hitch up their costumes. A single plastic bucket or basket for candy is plenty to cope with.
- Pack a backpack with essential kit like umbrellas, waterproofs, and band-aids in case of the odd blister.
- Maybe take a soft bag for overflow treats and candy!
Dry your feet
Now you’ve enjoyed scaring the locals, when you get home, make sure everyone’s feet are washed, clean and dried. Pop on a fresh pair of socks too. Athlete’s foot is no treat for anyone, and wet or sweaty feet are a breeding ground for infection.
Remember to leave damp shoes to dry out overnight, and don’t wear them again until they are completely dry.
