Bunions
Hallux Valgus of the great toe, commonly known as a bunion, is a very common and potentially painful and debilitating condition.
What is a bunion?
Bunions occur when your big toe is not properly in position, so that the joint at the base of your toe juts out from the side of your foot. This abnormal positioning causes a sac of fluid at the base of the toe, called the bursa, to swell and become painful.
Bunion treatments and prevention
Treatment of a bunion can include obtaining proper fitting footwear to alleviate pressure. In addition, a bunion shield pad or modifying shoes may help reduce the pressure that results in a painful bursa. Often prescription custom made orthotics is the solution. Severly deformed bunions may require surgical correction.
